We went to Richmond at the weekend and I actually got a few minutes to myself in HMV and loads of money climbed out of my pocket and threw itself at the cashier. Oh well. This is what I got in return;
I bought this because I always liked them in the old days. Now it appears I'm getting old.
Boring load of wank. Sounds like Ginger is just ranting about all his old girlfriends and moaning about the world. Lyrically dull then. Has the occasional spark of interesting melodic and rhythmic interest that always made them stand out but really it just makes you want the old stuff rather than making this any good. Some of it's a right mess. None of the guitar makes me go ooh. Most of it's very heard it all before. Anybody want to buy it? 4/10
I listened to everything on one of the listening posts in HMV and this girl's voice made me feel all pleasant so I brung it away for repeated enjoyments. Reminds me a bit of a sort of slow scissor scisters with the annoyingness removed. Also reminds me of Aimee Mann but with a much better voice. Kind of nice mid range floatyness type MOR pop atmospheric minimal Damian Rice/Tori Amos without a pianoish stuff. Told you I was getting old. Also Kate Bush and Bjork in her voice as well. Some fantastic reverbs.
Funny how I don't really care about the lyrics on this one. I guess it's like the words have to be more important if you're getting them shouted at you repeatedly but here they say them quietly so you can take them or leave them. Anyway, dese words amn't too bad.
With the Wildhearts I could just skip to the next track anytime but I couldn't do that when listening to this because it seemed wrong to stop the beautiful sounds.
And the CD insert smells nice. Download that.
Does get a bit lost and too slow in places though, a bit easy listening so erm 8/10.
Was going to say seven but "Honey, Honey" is just fantastic. Begging to be sampled and bunged on some beatses.
My other impulse purchase from the listening post. Couldn't believe this. Sounds massive. Big harmonies. Big drums. Deep vocals. Sweeping wall of noise dynamics and little scratchy ambient background parts. It's how I always wanted Death in Vegas to feel but they were never anything like it. Kind of Alabama 3ish. A lot like Iggy Pop singing with gospel choir and David Holmes on rhythm. Enjoyed this stacks.
Wonder if it'll stay interesting with such big lazy areas of repeaty beaty bits with no melody. We'll see. For now 9/10. Haven't listened to it all properly yet mind you. The score on the door may be revised toward the floor.
