OK, I was going to take some highly contrived and really cool pictures making my bike look great and beautiful in action but we were both knackered from a long ride so here are some more natural shots showing us relaxing at home.
I'm not lazy, I'm making better use of my time. The mundane things that can be automated should be, so that I have more time to do interesting things. Think Of how much time I spend a week making tea..
Why would we be fat? Are we fat because the dishwasher does the washing up (better than we ever could)? Less time waiting for tea to boil means that I could go for a walk in the woods, or read my book without having to move, hence getting more reading done in a shorter amount of time due to no flow interruption.
And if I'm playing on our Wii, exercising, I have to stop, make tea, come back. the more things the Wii can do, the better.
I really fancy Wii Fit btw.
And yes, I want a longer life, genetic engineering experiments please proceed and make this true.
See.........whether this is tongue in cheek or
not..........................its a shame that you aren't the only
person to think like this....
YES, not doing the washing up makes you fatter! Its not just that on
its own, its the accumulation of all the small things that help us keep
our health. Whether it be washing up, walking the dog, doing the
housework, cleaning the car (sorry, that doesn't happen very often, I
will admit)........all the humdrum every day things that we
do........it ALL accumulates. If we had a robot to do everything for
us, then we wouldn't get off our arses and become hugely fat.
The obesity problem isn't just about bad education on food in this
country, its also the gross lack of exercise we all have too. Most
people have remarkably sedentary lives and if no supplementary exercise
is done, then fat and then die.......simple as that.
Robots to help our lives won't.............
Also, the Wii won't give you the exercise you need in total. Might feel
like you are getting workout, but if you rely on that to keep you fit,
then you are really delusioning yourself.....
Not played Wii Fit yet though........would like to have a go. When you
say "fancy" it.......is there a character on it thats quite "fit"...?
As for genetic engineering........don't hold your breath. We will all
be dead and gone by the time they can stop or reverse the ageing
process by genetics......and not only that, if they did stop the ageing
process, how long would you want to live with a sound mind, but a
deteriorating body? You can only hold back environmental wear and tear
on the body so long before that gets hold of you...........
As Iron Maiden once famously said..........."As soon as you are born,
you're dying"........fact of life I am afraid. Its the quality of that
life you have that makes all the difference...........and if you are
lucky, look after yourself and do the right things, you can have a GOOD
quality of life, for a much longer time...........
DO SOME EXERCISE JAMES!!!!!! I want to know you for many, many years to come yet!!!!!
John, I am definitely not delusioning myself. If I had to do the washing up I wouldn't have time to take the dog for a work. Therefore not doing the washing up does not make me fatter. FACT!
Automating the tedious things means that we can actually do something interesting. If I still had to use an Abacus and Morse code this message would take me all day, not 30 seconds.
Wii Fit, is out in April. Although I'm sure that exercise is actually bad for you.
As for "how long would you want to live with a sound mind, but a
deteriorating body?" well, that's too long a discussion, but I was thinking of a sound mind and a sound body. And don't tell me it isn't possible, because it probably is and we just don't know how yet. More genetic experiments please.
LOL!!! I wasn't talking about YOU being delusional, I was using it as a
figure of speech! Anyway, nothing aimed at you James, I was talking
about society in general....
I see what you are saying, I really do, but the problem is, there are
very few people out there who actually see technology like you do. Joe
Bloggs is going to have all this tech at their fingertips and abuse it.
The country is getting fatter as it is and we don't have that much tech
going around. You can't tell me that they dont have the choice to turn
this stuff off and go for a walk, run, go to the gym, join a club etc
etc etc..........and for kids, just go out and play. But its not
happening cos technology already is making us NOT do anything. YOU may
be an exception to this and you are thinking along the correct lines of
how technology is supposed to help us. But for Shaz and Darren with
their three kids, one parent on benefit and the other who has an ASBO,
is going to have all this at their disposal, yet what are they going to
do with it? I rest my case.......
As for the last bit.............well, the is little chance that we are
ever going to be immortal. I am pretty sure replacement body parts
won't be that long coming. Problem is, the brain is not subject to this
"interchangability". The brain will always have to remain the same as
the brain IS you..........you change that, you fundamentally change who
you are. You could have a new body, new heart, new bones, arms, legs,
kidneys etc etc and carry on ad nauseum. Problem is, the brain will
continue to deteriorate cos you can't touch it........ just not
possible and probably won't be due to not only the technological
barriers, but the ethical ones too. So, you could have the body of a 25
year old, but the brain would be 200. And a 200 year old brain is not
going to be good.
See, body decrepidation is mainly down to free radicals in the air
breaking things down. Oxygen is the most important gas known to life,
yet it also kills us as it makes things HUGELY corrosive. Most body
problems start with general break down at a cellular level and most of
it, especially in the aging process, is down to oxygen. You can't take
that away as you won't be able to breath.........
So, its not going to happen. We all have a finite time here and we may
be able to extend that AND improve the quality of the time we are here.
But we will continue to put off the inevitable regardless. What the
problem will be is whether we will be "all there" to enjoy
it..............
Just like "technology", we are only just scratching the surface of what
can be done with genetics as its still not a very well understood
science, regardless of what you read and see. We know next to nothing
about our genome still, even though we have it mapped, sequenced, can
read it, tell you what genes are where and propose what they do. Its
just not THAT simple..............Nothing that will fundamentally
change how WE live when we get older will be available in our
lifetimes. Maybe the odd replacement part, but we won't see much of the
benefit of this.................Still, technology development at our
end is accelerating at a hugely increased rate, so I hope I stand to be
corrected..........
Why not create the technology and educate people? A mindshift is possible if we bother to try.
As for making my brain love for ever, saying "its not going to happen" is a very bold statement. I bet people from 300 years ago thought that a vaccine for [insert nasty disease here] would never happen, but it did.
We're always going to realise that our understanding of the world is lacking, and find something new to do. Even with physics it's happening and physics is the most well understood science (well, unless you count maths, but they just make stuff up).
Even ethical grounds can change, have changed.
You have to dream of a better future to make a better future.
Oh god, totally!!! I am in complete favour of making that future
happen, but there are some things that I think that maybe we are going
too far with and although the technology is there, it may not
necessarily be appropriate or useful, or needed ,and/or may make our
lives worse........a lot of the stuff that is happening now regarding
technology seems to be being thrown out and the long term repercussions
not thought about. You would have thought that the lessons learned from
the Industrial revolution and globalisation would make you think just
that little bit more before things are done, but doesn't seem to be the
way.
Oh, and when I said "our brains won't live forever", I meant in our lifetimes, not necessarily forever.
Crikey you two don't half go off topic sometimes. Facts: 1. James will always be fit and thin until his children move out. 2. The future is more cool bicycles. 3. See what I did there?
Comments
I'm still waiting for the integration of the bike log to Twitter.
Oh, hang on, we are......................
Its amazing how much energy just doing the small things take up. Just doing those will help you keep fit and a longer life.........
And if you want more time, then surely you want a longer life?
Besides, take the book with you to the kettle. You CAN read it while it is boiling.....
And if I'm playing on our Wii, exercising, I have to stop, make tea, come back. the more things the Wii can do, the better.
